On November 11th, we celebrate our veterans. But mothers are also veterans of war. Here is a story about such a mother written by Lady Eve Marlowe, the heroine in my novel, Cleopatra’s Perfume.

Before Lady Eve married a member of the British peerage, she was a cabaret dancer in Berlin in the late 1920s during the wild days of the Weimar Republic.

The scene in what I call a “story vid” (story video) takes place after one of the girls in the show is murdered and Eve goes to visit her mother.

Happy Veterans Day!

I had no idea what I’d find when I went through an old chest belonging to Lady Carlton, the heroine in my Spice novel, The Blonde Samurai.” A chest decorated in makie or sprinkled pictures, a process using gold and silver flakes and powder captured in lacquer to present narrative imagery.

Inside its velvet depths I discovered tortoise shell combs, a folded up obi or sash embroidered with golden threads, silken red cords and scrolls of rice paper glistening with the dew of times past.

As if the words were written yesterday instead of the late 1870s.

Flowing, cursive handwriting graced the thin paper woven with serpentine tails and tells the story of the fiery first meeting between Lady Carlton and her adored samurai, Lord Shintaro.
(As for their sensual encounters, you’ll find plenty of lovemaking and exotic sexual acts in “The Blonde Samurai,” e.g. wakame sake, drinking sake from between the thighs of the beautiful heroine.)
When Lady Carlton–Katie–wrote her memoir, The Blonde Samurai, she inscribed it in first person. But for her own pleasure, she was curious about what Shintaro thought about her, a Western woman who had come to Japan as a virgin bride in 1873.

She decided to find out.

By asking him.

During the late afternoons when a titillating breeze cooled the day and the passing of time stopped for the drinking of tea, Katie and Shintaro sat under the flowering cherry blossoms and warmed their hands around tiny tea cups and talked about their first encounter at the Imperial Palace.

What follows over the next three posts are episodes of “Tea with My Samurai,” depicting this scene that appears in Katie’s memoir, but told here from Shintaro’s point of view as he related it to her during their teatime conversations.

They’re straightforward, interesting and quite naughty.

Sip your tea slowly.

You’re in for a treat.

The Blonde Samurai: She embraced the way of the samurai.

Two swords. Two loves.
“Told from the heroine’s first-person point of view, this memoir-style novel is a witty and wonderful story, full of strongly defined characters.”

Lord Shintaro speaks of the first time he saw Katie outside the emperor’s Imperial Palace in Tokyo (spelled Tokio at that time).
(Katie’s POV of the same scene appears in “The Blonde Samurai” on pages 154-156.)

Part 1:

He was a man condemned.

Not by the barbarians from faraway lands trying to influence his beloved emperor, a boy not yet a man, to outlaw the way of the samurai, but by a woman.

An Englishwoman, no less.

In a red hat. With a long black ribbon tied in a big bow under her chin. A chin raised in defiance of him, a samurai lord and the master of his clan. Racing past him as if she couldn’t wait to meet her lover.

There, look at her. She was as wanton as the tayû, the highest paid courtesan, to a daimyo, lord, from times past who could turn away a customer if it so pleased her.

He envied the man meeting her, whoever he was, for her great beauty reminded him of the perfect cherry blossom. Always stunning, always elusive. Fleeing on the wind before he could capture it in his palm.

Clenching and unclenching his fists, Shintaro barely contained himself from grabbing her and holding her close to him. Smelling her strange scent that reminded him of cut lavender. Fresh and laden with a sweet fragrance, yet spiced with the perfume of her desire.

Aroused by her, he breathed in deeply. A raging burn erupted in his groin, disturbing his harmony. Something he never allowed to invade his mind. He could do nothing but look at her. Want her. Think of spreading her thighs and setting his mouth upon the moist folds of her lower lips, nibbling on her, imagining her taste upon his tongue.

He also enjoyed the custom of sampling a woman’s elixir as it dripped from between her bare thighs and into a sake cup he held in one hand, while fingering her with the other. A custom he enjoyed often with the courtesans in the Green Houses of Yoshiwara.

He grunted. This woman possessed the same tempting lure as the courtesan and must be put in her proper place.

He yearned to strip off her petticoats and whatever godless garments she wore underneath and let her passion rule her. He’d find her nude and wanting as he pressed his lips against the swell of her breasts.

He cocked an eyebrow. An interesting idea, though another problem faced him. He had never undressed a gaijin, foreigner. It presented a challenge to him. His usual move was to slip his hand under the kimono of a beautiful courtesan to fondle her bare breasts. A favor he enjoyed when the woman bade him sit on her right side. A way of showing her interest without words, since her kimono crossed left over right.

This Englishwoman gave him no such invitation. It only made him want her more. He sneered at her. He knew of but one way to bare her flesh to him.

Slice off her clothing. With his sword.

Piece by piece.

He reached for his weapon.

To be continued…

Did you catch JACKIE COLLINS on The View promoting her latest book POOR LITTLE BITCH GIRL?

She was fabulous, as always. And she’s just as cool in person. I had the opportunity to interview Jackie when she was at the Book Expo in Los Angeles for Married Lovers. She was gracious and funny as you’ll see in the video.

I also did the interview in Italian since I was promoting my Harlequin Spice book in Italian, Bionda Vendetta (Spies, Lies & Naked Thighs).

Here’s the video in Italian of Jackie and me:

Thankz, Jackie, for being an inspiration to women everywhere!

by Lady Carlton née Katie O’Roarke, heroine of “The Blonde Samurai”

As the cold days linger and the frost bites at my nose like an unhappy hummingbird, I am oft reminded that the smells of this season–soot and the burning of firewood–make the coming of spring an ever so joyful occurrence with its fragrant scents.

Rose, jasmine, lavender.

Delightful scents that the geisha and courtesans use in their unique, charming manner since these artistic ladies do not use perfume in the manner you do.  They apply scent to the air (incense sticks in redolent smells such as sandalwood and cinnamon) or to the many layers of their silken robes or kimono.  They consider it most important that their scent lingers in the mind of the gentleman once he has taken leave of their futon.

I am reminded of the young geisha I met in the pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara named Simouyé *** and how she used scent to entertain the customer with her art before the courtesan made her appearance.  A geisha owns many kimono, each one sumptuous and silky and painted with original patterns in the most vibrant colors, but it is the scent of the geisha that makes a gentleman catch his breath and yearn to take her in his arms.

How is this possible?

Scent affects a gentleman’s mood, evoking a reaction to a smell even before he identifies it, sparking sensual memories with a memorable woman.

Such as you, dear lady reader.

If I may do so, I shall pen my thoughts about scent so you may use them the next time you wish to seduce your husband or your lover (though rarely are they one and the same in the boudoirs of Mayfair) and send him adrift in a magical dream where you are the lead player.

1.  The wise goddess of nature infuses flowers with potent, seductive scents (the world of geisha is called the “flowers and willows world).  A drop of an essential oil is all you need. No more.  Even if you can’t smell it late in the evening after you return from a soiree, he can.

2.  Warm weather enhances your scent, begging that you be judicious during the Season in applying scent to your skin.  Honeysuckle and jasmine are soft fragrances best worn for tea at Brown’s, but for evenings (especially when you wish to be mysterious and are attending a masked ball), a heavy, musky scent can be most seductive.

3.  A favorite scent of mine–lavender–reduces stress and can help you relax when your household is in disorder (has your husband been chasing after your new ladies maid again?) as well as relieve anxiety and promote a sense of well-being.  Though you may be more inclined to look for a new maid to regain your good nature.

4.  Oriental fragrances are all the rage with their powdery, sensual, bewitching scent.  Be daring and shed your inhibitions in the boudoir.  Do as the courtesan does and undress slowly in front of your husband or lover and not behind a pearl-inlayed screen, the scent of an oriental paradise wafting in the air and seducing him as he watches you.

5.  I am aware that many of you dab scent behind your earlobes.  No geisha would do so nor should you.  She is aware that the skin in that area produces an oil that affects the scent.  Instead, rub scent behind your knees since scent rises.

I shall leave you with a final thought about fragrance: though it may be considered unladylike to apply scent between your breasts, what with the current rage of low décolletage in gowns so popular among ladies of the upper class, is there not a more desirable place for his lordship to bury his nose?

***Jina’s note: Simouyé, the mama-san and teahouse owner in “The Blonde Geisha” makes a cameo appearance in The Blonde Samurai.”

New Year’s Eve is all about champagne and sparkle. And you and your man. Whether you’re celebrating in a fancy restaurant in red sequins and high heels or at home in comfy sweats and slippers, in this special New Year’s post, we’ll talk about finding your inner Geisha with tips on how to use it to turn on your man tonight and every night…

Geisha. Seductive, mystical creatures wrapped in yards and yards of tight silk, their voices soft and charming, their elegant manners quiet and reserved, yet their mystical allure can break a man’s heart.

And turn him on.

How do they do it?

Geisha are skilled in the arts and that includes the art of understanding men. These divine seductresses are not purveyors of the sex trade, but their job of entertaining men includes arousing his most sensual erogenous zone: his brain.

In my new Spice novel, “The Blonde Samurai,” the heroine discovers the allure of the geisha in the pleasure quarters: “Two maids removed his clothes while the courtesan changed her kimono and called for a young geisha to play the samisen. Simouyé. I recall her with great clarity because of her sophistication for one so young, her back straight, her bearing elegant and refined. Shintaro smiled at her and a twinge of jealousy coursed through me as if he knew her intimately…”

Here are my 5 Tips to finding your inner geisha to turn on your man:

1.) The nape of the geisha’s neck painted white with two serpent’s tongues left unpainted hints at her genitalia, arousing a man. Wear a push-up bra with cut-outs under a tight-fitting sweater to turn him on.

2.) The Japanese love hot baths, including the geisha. Make a soapland paradise for your man. Grab your jasmine-scented soap then do a “lather dance” for him in the shower, soaping him up then using your body as the washcloth until he’s ready for action.

3.) Geisha know how important scent is to creating a mood. Her fragrance is as personal as the stroke of her brush doing calligraphy. Don’t try a myriad of different perfumes with your man. Find the most provocative one or two, make them your only perfumes, and you, or at least the memory of you, will linger in his mind forever.

4.) Geisha are known for their witty, sexy repartee. Give your man an earful as well as an eyeful with playful phone sex. Talk sexy to him on your cell phones while he watches you and tells you what he wants you to do next.

5.) A pretty geisha opens a wicker basket containing steaming hot washcloths, her dark eyes misty with dewy droplets. Smiling, she serves her guest chilled saké then offers him a hot washcloth, oshibori, to soothe away his daily travails. Relax your man with a hot cloth and his favorite chilled brew after a hard day at the office.

Don’t be shy about discovering your Inner Geisha. Your man will love you for it.

Happy New Year!! And have a great 2010!!
